Gut Health
When we refer to the GUT we are speaking about a long tube that has a few organs attached to it (like the pancreas, the liver, the gallbladder and others). The job of the GUT is to break down the food we eat, serve as a barrier to the rest of the body and be the home of the microbiome. The microbiome is a group of microbes that protect your body (they are the first line of defense) and help produce important neurotransmitters such as seratonin.
According to functional medicine (but also TCM and Aruvedic medicine) the GUT is the center of your immune system. Therefore if you are dealing with autioimmunty, cancer, mood and brain issues, skin disorders and other diseases you need to look into the health of your GUT.
An unhealthy gut is when the intestinal barrier becomes permeable (i.e.“leaky gut syndrome”), large protein molecules escape into the bloodstream. Since these proteins don’t belong outside of the gut, the body mounts an immune response and attacks them. Studies show that these attacks play a role in the development of diseases and mood disorders.
In functional medicine, we believe that every system in the body is connected. Your digestive and hormonal systems, for example, aren’t independent of one another. At the centre of it all is a properly functioning digestive system. The gut is the gateway to health. The first step I take with all of my patients, regardless of their diagnosis, is to heal the gut. I use a system called The Restore Program, which is a simple 4-step approach to repairing the gut and restoring the body’s balance.
